Dude opinion
“If you shape your life according to nature, you will never be poor; if you shape it according to people’s opinions, you will never be rich.” -Epicurus
“Well that’s your opinion man” -Jeffrey “Dude” Lebowski
No drama is an easy line; it does some real work, some heavy lifting; it wades into a terrible situation with personal choices lowered, insulted, religions cursed, physical space invaded, and possible injury incurred. The ask highlighted by Viktor Frankl is to be a pause, a place, a moment between infraction/stimulus and response; this space may be all we are between sensing and reacting or thinking and claiming the ability to respond.
Yeah, man, we know “No drama”. Natural life, food, shelter, scientific inquiry (enough to quell anxiety), relatedness, competency (a skill or trade, other desire or admirer); this is a natural life. We relate, grow and change; we allow new mates to become good friends; we banter, but in a world where you can be anything, be kind. I struggle; my frustrations fill my cup, and it spills with anger, uncouthness, and drama, but I clean up my mess, apologise and try again, just like on defence: press, guide, shepherd, and try again if I miss. I let others guide me back to ease, no drama, and balance. We won’t be perfect, but together we can remember to ignore the opponents' badgering.
This dude has apologised for his shortcomings, short temper, stiff spine, occasional retaliation, and I am better for it. When you raise your head, look a friend in the eye and say I will do better eventually it works, and you mean it. Knowing when to sub, walk away or make space isn’t easy “No drama” is work. The Wu Wei, the path of ease: it is natural; water doesn’t force its way through stone with one drop but with relentless effort. The path will open, but until it does, it regroups, goes around, gathers a stream, eventually an ocean and storm cloud and tries again to bring down the mountain. It doesn’t care; it will wash away man’s grand plan and tiny structures. We go again, head up, play the way we face, simple pass, and another; think rondo, faster decisions, use the team, easy.
