Dude W L D nah
7/10 stars. It had a good beat I could dance to it.
The voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles with our unfavored appendages makes football a preposterous pastime. We aren’t wired to use the feet with dexterity; it is the hips the brain is organised around, holding the corpus up, propelling it. It is far enough from a useful skill that it is almost like a peacock's tail, a costly display.
None of that matters because the game has enraptured the globe, and many have tried or at least respect the game. The part that makes it so alluring is that we can win. We take some blokes out them in matching kit and say, you lot just try and stop us. The breath, the air, the wind, the pace, a touch and seek a moment of poise. An easy pass, another the we see a space and look for one more. We play the way we face; we push, we pull, we don’t accost the ref (we know he is cute, but he is ours, so behave). A hand up and appeal, but play to the whistle. The part I can’t get over is we want desire, long for the score.
Dude, he enlists for the struggle, the tussle, the competition, the alive part, the measured pass, the execution, the plunderers working together through those passages of play. The W is great, and L is frustrating; the D is probably fair, but I do care about those moments when they are not alive. They reduce the ninety to a measurement; they lose all the beautiful parts of the struggle. Between 3 and 4, there are infinite differences (just ask pi); the journey from kickoff to the final whistle is a journey that makes 90 min disappear.
I want to be a part of that story. I do not need it translated for the masses into a score or W L D. The measure dilutes the experience, belittles the joy, removes the nuance, noise and nutmegs the spice that made the game an experience.
